GOALS AND PROGRESS

PURPOSE – TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF RETIRED TELECOMMUNICATION WORKERS WHO ARE IN RECEIPT OF A PENSION FROM THE TELECOMMUNICATION WORKERS PENSION PLAN

GOALS

FAIR SHARE OF PENSION SURPLUS FOR RETIREES

Progress: In 2007 the Trustees approved an increase for retirees for the first time in many years. This increase was a result of BCARTW pressure. There was a further small increase for retirees on July 1st, 2010. The Trustees will be looking at an on-going policy for any future increases.

RECOGNITION BY THE TWU

Progress: The TWU is including our application forms in the packages sent out to new retirees.

  • UPDATE 2015:  TWU, USW Local 1944 has made a decision to no longer recognize the BCARTW and has stopped distributing the BCARTW membership application form.
  • UPDATE 2016:  TWU, USW Local 1944 is again including the BCARTW application form in the package sent to new retirees
RETIREES UNIT– RECOGNITION AT CONVENTION – WITH VOICE AND VOTE ON PENSION ISSUES ONLY

Progress: Delegates from Retirees Unit R55 attend TWU, USW 1944 Conventions with full voice on all issues and can vote on pension issues. Retirees are now eligible to run for the position of Pension Trustee. R55 delegates are also able to vote for the TWU President and Secretary-Treasurer as they are ex officio Pension Trustees.

  • UPDATE:  In 2018, elections for President and Secretary-Treasurer of TWU, USW Local 1944 will be held by referendum ballot in accordance with the USW Constitution. Retirees are not entitled to vote on referendum ballots, so R55 delegates will lose voting rights for two Trustee positions.
RETIREE ON THE PENSION BOARD OF TRUSTEES – ELECTED BY RETIREES FROM THE RETIREES

Progress: Sister Carol Nagy was elected as a Pension Trustee at the March 2006 Convention for a six year term. Sister Nagy was eligible to run as she was an active member at that time. She is a retiree and member of the BCARTW. Retirees are now eligible to run for the position of Pension Trustee. We will continue to pursue the goal of having a Pension Trustee elected by retirees from the retirees. In May 2012, Sister Nagy was re-elected for another six year term.

GUARANTEED RETIREE POSITION ON THE PENSION BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Progress: Local R55 sent a resolution to the May 2011 Convention to include a guaranteed position for retirees on the Pension Board. The Convention concurred with our resolution but the Constitution Committee came back to the May 2012 Convention with constitutional language that did not satisfy the direction that Convention had given the Committee. Convention did not pass the Committee’s recommendation. The decision that was taken at the 2012 Convention does not alter the ability of a retiree to run for a pension trustee position; it simply means that a position is not a guaranteed retiree position. Unit R55 is continuing to work towards the goal of a guaranteed position. Meanwhile, retirees are well represented on the Board by Sister Nagy.
